I’m the director of operations for Pine Island Camp, a writer, and a registered Maine guide. I also occasionally take a good photo.

Ten years ago, when our sons were 12 and 13, we set off on our first family bike trip, a 200-mile journey across Prince Edward Island. Later that year, I enrolled in a winter hiking course. Those two experiences opened the door to a decade of adventures I never imagined were possible. One trip led to the next, and before long we were bikepacking through the desert, making first tracks across snowy ridgelines, and canoeing wild rivers.

I fell in love with setting out under my own power, embracing the challenges of terrain and weather, and sleeping on the ground in remote places far from modern comforts. The problem-solving, resilience, and teamwork these trips demand have strengthened my family, deepened my friendships, and enriched my life beyond measure.

I spent nearly a decade as a volunteer trip leader with the Appalachian Mountain Club before earning my registered Maine guide license. Today, I lead a variety of trips designed to help people build skills and confidence while finding a community of joyful adventurers.
